Penn Relays – Day 1 Report - Solomon, Stewart Renew Rivalry

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - Shalonda Solomon feels good as new. The South Carolina junior battled through a hip injury during the indoor circuit but appears to be rounding into the form that catapulted her to the 2006 NCAA indoor and outdoor 200m titles last season.

Solomon anchored South Carolina to a comfortable heat win in the 4x100m relay in 44.71 in the opening session of the 113th Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field on Thursday (26) to set up a showdown with Auburn senior Kerron Stewart in today’s College Women Championship of America final.

Brooks Sports Commemorates Liz Duncan Killed During Run

On Saturday, April 21, the world tragically lost a beloved daughter, sister, friend, and co-worker.

Elizabeth “Liz” Duncan, Brooks Sports Customer Service Representative, was hit by a car in Seattle and died at the scene. That morning, Liz was out for a daily training run and stood at an intersection waiting for the rest of her running group to arrive. Without warning, an out-of-control car jumped the curb, struck Liz and killed her instantly.

Liz is survived by her family, including her parents and two brothers from Washington’s Tri-Cities area. She was to celebrate her 27th birthday today, April 24. More about Liz.

Jackson Opens With 48.75 400m Hurdles Win At Kansas Relays

Lawrence, Kansas, USA - World champion Bershawn Jackson isn’t quite yet a household name in track and field but the 400m hurdler is doing his best to change that image.Jackson won the 400m Hurdles in 48.75 at the last day of the 80th Kansas Relays yesterday (21) for the fastest time in the world this year in his seasonal debut on a warm and windy afternoon in the featured “Gold Zone” competition at the University of Kansas’ Memorial Stadium on Saturday (21).

Parry O'Brien, 75; Revolutionized Shot Put

Parry O'Brien, whose fascination with the shotput and physics fueled a career in which he held the world record from 1953 to 1959 and won two gold medals and a silver medal in four Olympic games, has died. He was 75.O'Brien, who revolutionized the sport by devising a new throwing technique, died Saturday while participating in a masters' swim meet in Santa Clarita. His wife, Terry, with whom he lived in the Rancho Belago section of Moreno Valley, said he had suffered a heart attack.

At his peak, O'Brien won 116 consecutive competitions. He was the first shotputter to exceed 60 feet and extended the world record from 59 feet, 3/4 inch in 1953 to 63 feet, 4 inches in 1959, raising it 16 times.

VS ATHLETICS WINS FOUR EVENTS AT THE MT. SAC RELAYS

WALNUT, CA—The 49th Mt. SAC Relays was a “Coming Out Party” for the VS Athletics Track Club as Southern California’s newest club made its presence known in grand style at America’s largest annual track meet. 18 VS athletes competing in 14 events accumulated four wins and three top-5 placings, while producing 9 season best marks. USATF Names World Champs Coaching Staffs

University of Miami head women's coach Amy Deem and Texas A and M head coach Pat Henry have been named to serve as the women's and men's head coaches, respectively, for Team USA's track and field squads for the 2007 IAAF World Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Osaka, Japan, USA Track and Field announced Thursday. Ralph Lindeman and Diane Wholey will serve as head managers.

Cal Poly's Danny Williams to coach sprinters and hurdlers.

Boston Marathon Results

On local Boston TV, they were calling it "Monsoon Monday," and in the early hours of Patriots' Day that was as good a name as any. Torrential rains soaked southern New England, while ski country in Vermont got more than a foot of snow. Wind gusts up to 50 miles an hour buffeted volunteers at the finish line in Boston as they toiled just after dawn. Could the race really go on?

VS Athletics' Kraychir Shatters National Freshman And California State Hammer Records

Casey Kraychir, a freshman at 29 Palms high School, threw a new girl’s hammer freshman National record and California state record yesterday at the prestigious Mt. Sac Relays.

Casey almost did not make the finals, but came alive on her fifth and sixth throws. She first broke the girls national hammer freshman record on the fifth round with a throw of 164’1”, breaking Allison Horner’s existing record of 159’9” set two years ago. With only one throw left, and one inch shy of Daniella Thu’s California state record of 164’02”, Casey unleashed an incredible throw of 170’2” to take sixth place at this years Mt Sac. University Open women’s hammer division. Casey’s 170’2” also places her 15th on the all-time girls high school national list; and currently ranks her 3rd nationally. Complete article here.

Tomas Fajardo Breaks 60-Foot Barrier

Tomas Fajardo announced his arrival on the national shot put scene with personal best throw of 60’ 7¼” (18.47m) to win the shot put at the 2007 Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. A mid-year graduate of Cal State Northridge with a degree in Recreation Management, he is now working on a M.A. degree in Public Administration.

15th Mobile Challenge of Champions

Mobile Challenge of Champions race director Steve Schoenwald and his crew seem to go all out to make sure that everyone – athletes, coaches, parents/fans – have the best possible experience at their national-level meet.
This past weekend was no exception. But even they can’t control things like weather, injuries, illness, and other things that affect the outcomes of competition. So it was that the 15th anniversary of this event here in 2007, at St. Paul’s Episcopal School’s E.E. Delany Stadium, at times resembled a war of attrition. There was the unseasonably cool weather – temps in the 50s – and a crazily gusty, swirling wind that changed courses at least twice during Saturday’s invitational meet. Read more.

Arcadia Recap on Dyestat

The meet ended with two brilliant 4x400 relays. The girls race (left) saw anchors Takecia Jameson of Eleanor Roosevelt MD and Jasmine Joseph of Poly Long Beach CA race side by side for the last 200 meters, with Jameson never yielding the lead. Roosevelt 3:40.48, Poly 3:41.17. Roosevelt ended with two firsts and three seconds in six relays. The boys race (right) saw Poly win its third relay of the meet in US#1 time of 3:14.63. Bryson Nellum anchored all three wins and also won the open 400 in 46.02.

Steve Scott Takes A Tumble

Shortly after last Halloween, Cal State San Marcos track and cross country coach Steve Scott bought two tubes of fake blood and some fake teeth, and soon put the props to work.Trailing a couple of his runners on a workout, the American mile record holder spread the red stuff across his face, applied the faux teeth, then banged his hand against a pole.
With Scott writhing in supposed pain, one of his female runners cried, “Coach, are you OK? Are you OK?”

Friday night session is all relays. The girls of Eleanor Roosevelt MD show their amazing range by being top seeded in five relays from 4x200 to 4xMile. USATF Athlete Of The Week: Natasha Hastings

Natasha Hastings has been named USA Track and Field's Athlete of the Week after setting three records at this past weekend's Weems Baskin Sprint Relays in Columbia, S.C.

The 2004 World Junior 400m champion, Hastings won the 400 meters in the world leading time this outdoor season of 50.55 seconds. Her performance shattered former NCAA champion and 2000 Olympian Miki Barber's school and track record of 50.63 seconds, set in winning the 2001 SEC title.

Hasay Is On Track For Ostrava

Jordan Hasay knows her time will come someday both on and off the track.

The 15-year-old American distance runner hopes to be selected to compete internationally for the first time at the 5th IAAF World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic (11-15 July).

Last June, Hasay won the 3000m in the USA Track & Field Junior Nationals in Indianapolis at age 14 but was unable to compete in the IAAF World Junior Championships in Beijing because she was too young.

Five New Athletes And Two New Coaches Join The VS Team

The VS Athletics Track Club has had a banner month of March in strengthening both its athlete roster and coaching staff with the addition of seven (7) outstanding new team members. New athletes joining the Club are shot/discus throwers Tomas Fajardo, Sam Lightbody and Katelyn Ciarelli, pole vaulter Erin Wessely, and distance runner Ozzie Piña.
